I am very pleased to welcome you to the 5th International Gerontechnology Expo&Forum (IGEF 2021) hosted by the Korean Association of Products and Services for Senior Citizens (KAPASS). The theme of the IGEF 2021 is “Gerontechnology for Healthy Aging in the COVID-19 Era: A Global Perspective.” Of the world's 7.7 billion people, the proportion of those aged 65 and over will increase from 9% to 16% (one in six) by 2050, and the issue of global aging is expected to intensify.

On the occasion of the 30th International Day of Older Persons on October 1, 2020, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterre called for attention to the disproportionate and severe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic not only on the health of older people, but also on their rights and well-being. In 2021, the United Nations has selected “Digital Equity for All Ages” as the theme for the International Day of Older Persons. Technological innovation brought about by the 4th industrial revolution is changing our daily lives and bringing new opportunities. However, according to UN statistics, half of the global population is unable to access online, and older people are particularly vulnerable to digital divide. Therefore, the United Nations urged for active measures to enhance digital equity.

The Korean Chapter of the International Society for Gerontechnology is preparing for the 13th World Conference of Gerontechnology (ISG 2022). On October 24-26, 2022, experts in gerontology and technology from all over the world will gather in Daegu, Korea for an academic conference and industry-government-academia-research network events on the theme of “Gerontechnology for All: Creating Human and Social Impact in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.”

IGEF 2021 will provide a forum to discuss ways to improve the quality of life of the elderly in the Pandemic era. We will review the current status of population aging in different countries, the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of older people, the role and issues of gerontechnology. I hope the IGEF 2021 will also provide an opportunity to learn about the trend of digital transformation in the field of age-friendly industry and sustainable models of longevity economy from a global perspective.
